Casual Opera for Casual Listeners

Rubato is an opera co-op, a group of talented young opera singers, dedicated to bringing classical music to new and varied urbanite audiences. Performing out of local bars and pubs, the group brings opera, art song, and music theatre to a casual setting.

We are very excited to announce that Rubato will soon be undertaking its very first staged production. On Wednesday, April 13th, 2011 at 7:30 PM, Rubato will present Johann Strauss's popular classic Die Fledermaus (in english), in our very own casual opera style. Come to Harbord House early to enjoy a hearty meal off their fantastic menu, and then grab a drink and head upstairs to watch the comedy unfold. As per usual, drinks will be served through out the performance.

Die Fledermaus was Strauss's must successful operetta, and is frequently performed on stages around the world. After Gabriel Von Eisenstein (Justin Ralph), plays an embarrassing trick on his best friend, Dr. Falke (David Roth), Dr. Falke longs for a chance to humiliate Eisenstein and get his revenge. With the help of Eisenstein's wife, Rosalinda (Erin Stone), their chambermaid, Adele (Alison Boudreau), and a bored, yet fantastically wealthy Russian prince, Orlofsky (Tracy Reynolds), Dr. Falke orchestrates a comedy of errors with the backdrop of a gorgeous, champagne drenched ball.

David Chodoriwsky will join the cast on the piano and as Music Director. The cast is as follows:
